September/October Loop

THE LOOP

“Desire, Devotion, Success”

Staff spotlights:

Richard

Throughout my life, I have been surrounded by fitness. My love for weight training began while I was a freshman in high school through the motivation of my coaches who pushed us to be the strongest, the fastest and the best. These coaches knew that lifting weights was the key to reaching our goals in sports. I love to see others excel in this area and achieve their goals and I am devoted to being a part of this process. My life has been blessed with opportunities to change lives through fitness and to encourage others to attain excellence in this area.

Shana

I enjoy coming to the Studio to help others reach their fitness goals. They always know that I will motivate them and will be there with my help so they can achieve their full potential! There is nothing better then seeing a client hitting goals and knowing they will be happy with the results.

Physical Therapy
Also added to the Studio 360 team is Debra Martin with Archer Physical Therapy. Debra Martin, MSPT, CLT is a Physical Therapist with 15 years of experience. She has developed a variety of programs to meet your needs, and serves as the Medical Director at many local athletic events.

Did you know?

Periodontal disease causes you to lose over 6 years of life expectancy.

Unwrapped toothpicks and candies at cash registers in restaurants often contain fecal matter from people who failed to wash their hands after using the restroom and then took a toothpick or candy themselves. Yum, yum!

People who smoke die on average 16 years younger than non-smokers do.

If you smoke, particularly in your house, your children will likely suffer from more ear, nose, and chest infections from the second hand smoke than if you did not smoke.

Sleeping on your back will give you the least amount of wrinkles of any sleep position.

Drinking ice water burns more Calories than un-chilled water.

Dentists recommend that a toothbrush be kept at least 6 feet away from a toilet to avoid airborne particles resulting from flushing.

In a public bathroom, the stall closest to the door is usually the cleanest, because it’s the least used.

Words for the month:

Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold,
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

Nutritional nuggets:

“Living the best quality of life by putting nutrition 1st” by Mckenzie Fleming

Do you want to feel better? Improper diet and/or eating habits can cause you to feel tired, sluggish, unfocused, irritable, and cloudy. With proper nutrition, you can feel content, productive, sharp, and at the top of your game, like a well-oiled machine.
In order to achieve long-term success, whatever the goal may be, one must ”learn” the proper steps needed to achieve this goal, otherwise the success is only temporary especially in a healthy diet. There is no “quick fix” or “magic pill”. Good health is derived from life long habits and behavior. If we do not change the direction we are headed, we will not end up where we want to be. Do not be fooled by the temporary success of “another fad diet” Learn to eat realistically 4 life! If you are ready to think about making some positive changes in your eating habits, Nutrition4Life and Studio 360 are ready to help!

Member spotlight:

Kim Buckner—Going the extra mile to reach the next level!

Kim Buckner calls herself a life-long athlete and her lifestyle bears that out. She has always been physically active. Kim enjoys walking and has even spent the past 1 ½ years running regularly and participating in triathlons. Recently, though, she began to feel that all this hard work accomplished little. She felt that she was starting to plateau. One day when she was out walking (of course), she discovered Studio 360—and her life has not been the same! Kim began to have a variety to her workout that she did not have before. Studio 360 focuses on the whole body (core training) and the results have been productive and pleasing to her. Kim cites many reasons for enjoying her workouts at Studio 360: “I never have the same workout and they do well targeting specific areas. I also feel stronger as a result of their great weight training.”  She continues, “In addition to better routines and a harder workout, I love the privacy that working out there provides. In addition, the staff is positive and encouraging. They are like family. It is a great environment!” Kim works in the downtown area and likes the proximity to Studio 360 and the “stress release” it provides in an often very busy day. Kim “absolutely” recommends Studio 360 to others who want to live a richer, more active lifestyle in a place where” fitness and health come full circle!”

Did you know?

If you eat a single M&M, in order to lose the calories you just gained, you need to walk the equivalent of a football field.

**************************************************************************Nutritional nuggets:

Here are six foods that can help attack unwanted belly fat:

  1. Quinoa

Per ¼ cup:170 calories/2.5 g fat/7 g protein/3 g fiber

. Penn State researchers found that dieters who ate whole-grains lost twice as much belly fat as those who stuck to white-flour products—even though they’d consumed the same number of calories. What’s more, quinoa contains twice the belly-filling protein as regular cereal grains, fewer glucose-raising carbohydrates, and even a handful of healthy fats. So start your day off with a cup of cooked quinoa combined with a ½ cup of milk and ½ cup of blueberries—microwave for 60 seconds, and you have a delicious (and slimming) alternative to your traditional oatmeal. Bob’s Red Mill Organic Quinoa won “Best Grain” in Men’s Health’s Best Foods Awards 2009.

  1. Green tea 0 calories

Catechins, the powerful antioxidants found in green tea, are known to increase metabolism. A study by Japanese researchers found that participants who consumed 690 milligrams of catechins from green tea daily had significantly lower body mass indexes and smaller waist measurements than those in a control group.

  1. Kefir

Per cup: 174 calories/2 g fat/14 g protein/3 g fiber

Think of kefir as drinkable yogurt, or an extra-thick, protein-packed smoothie. In either case, this delicious dairy product is a belly-blasting essential. The probiotics in kefir may also speed weight loss. We like Lifeway Lowfat Blueberry Kefir—it contains L. casei, the same probiotic used in the study.

  1. Avocado

Per avocado:322 calories/29 g fat (4 g saturated, 20 g monounsaturated)/13 g fiber/

4 g protein

Never fear this full-fat Mediterranean-diet staple: It’s teeming with healthy monounsaturated fats (also found in olive oil), which have been linked to lowered LDL cholesterol levels and weight loss.

  1. Eggs

Per 1 large scrambled egg:102 calories/7 g fat (2 g saturated)/7 g protein

A British study found that people who increased the percentage of protein-based calories in their diet burned 71 more calories a day (that’s 7.4 pounds a year!). Jumpstart your metabolism as soon as you wake up with a protein-rich breakfast of scrambled eggs. (Go to eatthis.com for other great no-diet weight-loss secrets.)

  1. Grapefruit

Per grapefruit:104 calories/4 g fiber/2 g protein

A grapefruit a day in addition to your regular meals can speed weight loss. The fruit’s acidity slows digestion, meaning it takes longer to move through your system, and you’ll end up feeling fuller, and more satisfied, for longer. And the vitamin C-packed grapefruit works to lower cholesterol and decrease risk of stroke, heart disease, and some types of cancer
